Contiuums Flashcards
Definition of motor/movement skill?
An action or task that has a goal and that requires voluntary body and/or limb movement to achieve the goal and is learned rather than being innate
What is a complex skill?
When there are many decisions to make.
May have to be learned in stages
What is a simple skill?
When the skill is straightforward with hardly any judgments and decisions to make. It can be taught as a whole and in a fairly repetitive way
What is a open skill?
- affected by the environment and predominantly perceptual
* movement have to be adapted to the environment and the skill is most externally paced
What is a closed skill?
- not affected by the environment and are predominantly habitual
- movements follow a set pattern and have a definite beginning and end
- tend to be self-paced
What is a self-paced skill?
- the performer controls the rate at which the skill is executed
- proaction by the performer
- usually closed skills
What is a externally-paced skill?
- the environment, which may include your opponent, controls the rate of performing the skill
- involves a reaction
- usually a open skill
What is a gross skill?
- involve large muscle movements
- not very precise
- include many of the fundamental patterns such as walking and jumping
What is a fine skill?
- involve more intricate movements using small muscle groups
- tend to be precise in nature
- Generally involve a high degree of hand -eye-co-ordination
What is a high organisation skill?
- a skill has a element or sub-routines that are very difficult to separate
What is a low organisation skill?
- a skill that is split up into sub-routines that are easily identified as separate movements
What is a sub-routine?
The elements, or separate movements, that’s make up a particular skill
What is a discrete skill?
> have a clear beginning and clear end
> skill can be repeated but the performer must start again from the beginning
> specific single skill
What is a serial skill?
> have several discrete elements which are put together to make an integrated movement or sequence of movements
> e.g the sequence of skills in a triple jump
What is a continuous skill?
> e.g cycling
no obvious beginning or end
> the end of one cycle is the beginning of the next
> the skill is repeated as a set pattern
