Guidance Flashcards
The type or combination of types chosen should depend on the:
The personality, motivation and ability of the performer
The situation in which learning or development of skills is taking place
The nature of the skill being taught and developed
What stages of learning is verbal guidance best suited to?
More advanced performers is effective when more perceptual information (tactics/positional play) need to be explained
Associative and autonomous learners, verbal feedback can be effective source of guidance to improve skill learning and development
What is verbal guidance?
Verbal guidance is used to describe the action and explain how to perform the activity
What does the coach need to be aware of when using verbal guidance?
- not speaking for to long
- some movements simply can’t be explained
- direct verbal guidance is better in early stages as it ensures learners have a clear idea of what needs to be done
- questioning techniques can encourage personal development and develop confidence
Advantages of verbal guidance?
- can be in the form of feedback, which can be used to reinforce correct movements and identify errors
- can hold the attention of the performer if used appropriately and can be used to motivate the performer to learn the movement skills
Disadvantages of verbal guidance?
- can lead to ‘information overload’- performer may get either distracted or confused by the guidance
- guidance given could be inaccurate and the performer may not develop the skills effectively
