Transcription Factors Flashcards
1
Q
Which hormones cannot cross the cell membrane?
A
Peptide hormones
2
Q
Which hormones are able to cross the cell membrane?
A
Steroid hormones
3
Q
How do steroid hormones work?
A
- Hormone enters cell and binds to receptor
- This forms hormone-receptor complex
- This acts as a transcription factor, activating or repressing genes
4
Q
How do peptide hormones work?
A
- Hormones bind to receptor on the cell membrane
- This activates messenger molecules in the cell cytoplasm
- Messenger molecules activate protein kinases
- This triggers a cascade inside the cell
- During the cascade, transcription factors are activated
5
Q
What is a cascade?
A
A chain of reactions
6
Q
How do transcription factors work?
A
- They bind to promoter regions on the DNA strand and increase or decrease the rate of transcription.
7
Q
What is a promoter region?
A
The section of DNA near the start of the gene that allows it to be transcribed.
8
Q
What are activators?
A
Transcription factors that increase the rate of transcription
9
Q
What are repressors?
A
Transcription factors that decrease the rate of transcription
