- Increases wear and tear of joints

What are the benefits of keyhole surgery?

What types of performance-enhancing drugs are there?
- Anabolic steroids
- Stimulants
- Narcotic analgesics
What are anabolic steroids?
Drugs that increase strength, speed and stamina by increasing muscle size. They allow athletes to train for longer periods of time but increase aggression
What are stimulants?
Drugs that speed up an athlete’s reactions and reduce fatigue. However, it increases aggression
What are narcotic analgesics?
Drugs that reduce pain, which prevents injuries affecting an athlete’s performance
What are the ethical arguments against the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport?
- They are illegal
- It makes competitions unfair
- There are serious health risks (high BP, heart & liver problems)
- Athletes may not be aware of the health risks
What are the ethical arguments that support the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport?
- It’s the athlete’s own decision to use them or not
- The competition is already unfair because some athletes (especially those with more money/sponsors) have better training facilities, coaches and equipment than others
