What is the mechanism of action of TXA?
●Antifibrinolytic. Blocks the version of plasminogen to plasmin which reduces fibrinolysis (breakdown of blood clots) and bleeding.
What are the indications of TXA?
●Hypovolaemia from uncontrolled bleeding.
●Postpartum Haemorrhage.
●Crush injury.
●Severe bleed enough to cause hypovolaemia requiring sodium chloride IV.
●Cardiac Arrest secondary to trauma.
What are the contraindications of TXA?
●Known severe allergy.
●Trauma greater than 3 hours old.
What are the cautions for TXA?
There are none.
What are the adverse effects for TXA?
There are none.
What is the preparation of TXA for an adult?
Draw up the 1g/10ml ampoule and administer IV undiluted over 1-2 minutes. Flush with 10ml of saline.
What is the onset time of TXA?
30-60 minutes.
What is the duration of effect of TXA?
8 hours.
