What is the mechanism of action of Naloxone?
●Blocks opiate receptors which reverses the effects of opiates in particular respiratory depression and sedation.
What are the indications for Naloxone?
●Suspected opiate poisoning with impaired LOC or significantly impaired breathing.
●Excessive adverse effects from administration of opiates.
What are the contraindications of Naloxone?
●Known severe allergy.
What are the cautions of Naloxone? (1)
●Chronic opiate use (can cause severe and rapid withdrawals).
What is the adult IV dose of Naloxone?
0.1-0.4mg. Can be repeated every 5 minutes as required.
What is the adult IM dose of Naloxone?
0.8mg. Can be repeated every 10 minutes.
What are the adverse reactions of Naloxone?
●Sweating.
●Tachycardia.
●Hypertension.
