Training Methods - Definitions Flashcards
Learn definitions for training methods
Resistance training
Providing a resistance against the muscle in an attempt to improve its strength, power or endurance
Interval Training
Physical training consisting of high intensity exercise periods followed by low intensity rest periods. Usually above 75% MHR and anaerobic system training.
Continuous training
Long slow distance training. Usually greater than 30 mins. At moderate intensity i.e. 75%MHR. Aerobic system.
Circuit training
comprises of 6 to 10 anaerobic or aerobic exercises that are completed one exercise after another. Each exercise is performed for a specified number of repetitions or for a set time before moving on to the next exercise.
Fartlek
A variation of continuous training which involves regular changes in intensity throughout the training sessions. This training therefore works both the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems.
Flexibility
Stretching the muscle to a longer position and holds it for 10 to 20 secs in order to extend the range of movement about the joint.
Plyometrics
Also known as jump training. Are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power.
Isometric resistance
The muscle is attempting to change length but cannot overcome the resistance. Like pushing against a wall
Isotonic resistance
Muscle changes length over a constant load. like bicep curl
