pros and cons
on= at place of employment
+ series of shorter sessions, cheaper, specific to business
-less valuable if delivered by same employee, waste of time, disruption in production, bad habits
off= away from the workplace (outside specialist training personnel?)
+ perk? (time away from work), opportunity to work in different environment, away from workplace encourages people to think about training
-expensive, waste of time?, induction training
what is induction training?
money is spent in ensuring the candidate is successful and stays in job- labor turnover at highest
no information overload
depends on type/complexity/level of job
academic training
e.g. trainee accountants
vocational training
instruction in practical skills needed for certain jobs (often part of apprenticeship scheme)
apprenticeship
on the job and in college on day release system, used by skilled trades
What is a training needs analysis?
ensures workers are given the skills to do their jobs effectively:
business collects info from stakeholders and observes job performance, highlights problems, feedback collated
issues training can’t solve?
poor management, job design, recruitment, poor production organisation, ineffective/inefficient equipment
why neglect training?
poaching, minimize short term costs, can’t make justifiable investment, intangible
factors to consider as part of a TNA
future targets, who and how to train, budget, no, people being trained, external training?
