job description
describes what job involves- title, location, purpose, main tasks
person specification
type of person needed for the job- qualifications, experience, skills, personal attributes
job advertisement
reflect description and specification- stating qualification and experience required
help screen or dissuade unsuitable applicants
internal vs external recruitment, examples
internal= jobs given to staff already employed in the business- promotion + reorganization
e.g. notice board, email, staff magazines
external= jobs given to staff outside the business
e.g. job centers, advertisements, headhunting, recruitment agencies, direct contacts, newspaper and magazines
Pros and cons of internal recruitment
+ easier to assess applicants, cheaper and quicker, already familiar (no induction), signals there’s career opportunities, more morale
- stale ideas- narrow thinking, internal politics, ripple effect, smaller talent pool, goals hard to achieve
Pros and cons of external recruitment
+new ideas/perspectives, initiate a turnaround, if experience-less training needs, diversity, talent pool, competitors ideas
- destroys present employees incentives, less info available, longer and expensive, pay more for job?, current members may fight new ideas, outsider takes time to become familiar
what is the recruitment process
define requirements- description, specification
attract potential employees- advertising
select right people- interview, ability tests
what does a recruitment agency do?
link between employer and employee- registers and employer asks for shortlists
