process of increasing knowledge and skills of the workforce to enable them to perform jobs effectively
what is the importance of training?
opportunity to expand the knowledge base of all employees but expensive for employers
employees also miss out on work time causing disruption which may delay the completion of projects

why is induction training important?
enables recruits to become productive as quickly as possible
can avoid costly mistakes
length of induction varies from job to job and depends on complexity of job, size of the business and level of position of the job
define on the job training
take place when employees are trained whilst they are carrying out an activity often at their place of work
what are three ways of on the job training and describe them
mentoring - employee paired with a more experienced member of staff
job rotation - employee work in different roles/departments to gain variety of skills
in house courses - usually held at the business location and designed with business in mind
what are three benefits of on-the-job training?
generally most cost-effective as business doesn’t need to pay travel expenses and overnight accommodation
employees being productive as job completed whilst learning
opportunity to learn while doing which some prefer
what are 4 drawbacks of on-the-job training?
quality depends on ability of trainer and time available
learning environment may not be conducive
potential disruption to production while the employee is demonstrating how the job should be done meaning longer waiting times for the customer
external providers may have specialist expertise that is not currently in the business
what is off-the-job training?
takes place in a different location from the job

vocational courses - take place at college/uni and some businesses offer modern apprenticeships
distance learning + e-learning - where trainee controls the pace and timing of their learning eg open uni courses
e-learning is where trainees use multimedia to learn eg online courses
what are 4 benefits of off-the-job training?
wider range of skills/qualifications can be obtained
can learn from outside specialists
employees can be more confident when starting a job
can provide a more conducive learning environment as there is less disruption
what are 4 drawbacks of off-the-job training?
more expensive eg transport and accommodation
lost working time and potential output from employee
new employees may need induction training still
employees have new skills/qualifications and may leave for better jobs
describe apprenticeships
form of training for young people while undertaking paid employment
focuses on skills required to carry out a specific job
schemes cover traditional skills sectors and modern skills sectors eg from engineering to banking and info tech
last 3-4 years generally
on-the-job training and practical and written tests
often combine workplace training with attendance in college
offer people aged over 16 a chance of paid employment linked with the opportunity to train for jobs at craft, technician and management level
supported by gov funding
if apprenticeship successfully completed, possible of permanent employment
qualifications attained once apprenticeship is complete
remuneration can be less than minimum wage
