what does appraisal mean?

how many times a year is an appraisal done?
once or twice

supervisors - work with the employee daily and know the job well
sometimes manager may conduct the appraisal instead
self appraisal - employee assess their performance which may be compared to a supervisor’s assessment
peer appraisal - conducted amongst colleagues
beneficial if the job requires teamwork
360 degrees appraisal - ratings gathered from colleagues, managers, supervisors and customers
provides more detailed feedback across all stakeholders
better understand how employees function as part of a team and to improve ways the teams work together
explain the benefit of improving performance
can be motivating if an employee’s work is recognised and valued
opportunity to encourage staff to discuss problems and come up with solutions to improve performance
explain the benefit of identifying training needs
opportunity for both employer and employee to suggest suitable training either to develop new or existing skills
explain the benefit of identifying promotion potential
if judgement is positive, allows employer to consider the potential of the employee to perform in a more demanding role
also allows employee to make their case for promotion to the employer
explain the benefit of providing information for HR planning
presents the opportunity for an employer to establish future plans for the employee
are they planning to leave or go part-time?
seeking promotion with the firm or elsewhere?
