Training Flashcards
Positive reinforcement
The act of rewarding behavior in order to encourage it to happen again in the future. This is the most successful technique in training
Negative reinforcement
Occurs when something uncomfortable or unpleasant is REMOVED or taken away to encourage a behavior to happen again
Positive punishment
The method of adding a consequence to an unwanted behavior. This method is no longer recommended as it can result in negative physical and psychological effects
Negative punishment
Taking away something pleasant to decrease a behavior
When do positive behaviors fade quickly?
When there is no consistency and trust.
Behavior modification rewards
Edible and vocal
Command- response-reward
The technique involves giving a command and immediately rewarding the desired response every time it’s performed until the pet responds consistently.
Clicker training
clicker is used to signal to the animal that it performed the right behavior and will receive a reward.
Extinction
The extinction behavioral modification technique involves eliminating a problem behavior by completely removing the reinforcement for the behavior.
Aversion therapy
Aversion therapy involves creating a relationship between an unpleasant stimulus and an object that an animal may be marking, chewing, or otherwise damaging.
Avoidance therapy
Avoidance therapy involves the use of positive punishment to diminish a problem behavior. The goal is for the pet to link the behavior with an unpleasant event and then avoid that circumstance. It’s important that the pet doesn’t associate the positive punishment with the owner.
Habituation
involves surrounding the animal with the stimulus causing the problem until the animal becomes acclimated to the stimulus and is no longer afraid of it.
Punishment
To be effective, punishment must occur every time the behavior occurs, be applied immediately, and be of appropriate intensity. The pet shouldn’t connect the owner to the punishment
How is punishment different than negative reinforcement?
Punishment differs from negative reinforcement in that punishment isn’t used to create a desired behavior but to eliminate an undesirable behavior.
Counter conditioning
The technique involves taking a stimulus linked to a negative emotion and reconditioning, or counterconditioning, the animal by linking the stimulus to a positive emotional response.
