What does DEA stand for and what involvement does it have in vet med?
DEA- Drug Enforcement Agencie
They regulate controlled substances in vet practices
What requirements does the DEA hold veterinary practices to?
- only a licensed vet can prescribe controlled drugs.
- these drugs must be kept in a double locked area.
Drugs must be logged and kept for five years - inventory must be taken every two years
What is OSHA?
Occupational safety and health administration
What does FDA stand for?
Food and Drug Administration
What branch of the FDA is responsible for veterinary medicine?
CVM ( center for veterinary medicine.
What does the CVM of the FDA do?
They monitor the animal health industry, administrating the sections of the FDA that pertain animals.
What is the USDA and what do they do?
United States department of agriculture
- the usda oversees the import of animals and develop animal programs to control disease in animal food.
What is APHIS?
A part of the USDA that enforces the animal welfare act. Also knows as Animal and Plant Health Inspection service
What is the Animal Welfare Act?
A group of federal laws to ensure the best possible care for lab animals.
What is EPA?
The environmental Protection act
What does EPA do?
They enforce regulations that aim to reduce pesticide contamination.
