What is imprinting?
A rapid process of learning that enables young animals to recognize and bond with its parents/caretaker and recognize them as individuals
What is a sensitive period
Early stage in life where young animals imprint which is necessary for survival.
When is a sensitive period?
2-3rd week of life when socialization occurs
When is a puppies socialization period?
4-14 weeks of age
Fear periods : 8-10 weeks and 6-14 months
When are kittens socialization periods?
2-8 weeks of age
What is aggression?
A behavior arising from an impulse to harm another being
What is the best way to prevent aggression?
Socialization
What is conflict related aggression?
Occurs when a dog is exposed to an uncomfortable or uncertain stimulus or conflict.
What is fear induced aggression?
Occurs when an animal is in a situation from which it can’t escape and perceives it as life threatening
What is predatory aggression?
Instincts to hunt
What is pain induced aggression?
Aggressive behavior related to pain is a protective instinct
What is inter male aggression?
Make dogs and cats commonly display aggression towards each other
Maternal aggression
A normal maternal instinct to protect its young
When do males reach sexual maturity in dogs?
7-8 months old
