Why are train authorities used?
In the event of an obstruction (including a disabled train), or system failures
How are train authorities issued?
Handed or dictated (NOT transmitted)
How much a train authority be completed? (5)
Blue/black ink with block letters
No erasures, alterations or abbreviations
On the prescribed form
Brief and clear
Containing only essential information
When would a train authority be verified, and by whom?
Verified by the Train Controller:
When the driver doesn’t understand something on the form
When the driver doesn’t receive the TA directly from the Train Controller or the Signaller
When a relief driver is relieving another driver (and the TA is in effect)
What information must be read to the Train Controller when verifying a train authority? (5)
Train Authority number
Red serial number
Date
Time
Relevant contents and instructions
When would a protecting train be used (in the case of a TA), and where should it be located?
When a wrong line movement is being performed
Minimum 100m from the end of the movement of the other train
When arriving at a signal box in the rear (on a TA), where must the train be stopped and what authority is needed?
Stopped 100m before outermost set of points (or platform, if there aren’t any points)
The controlling signaller needs to give permission, as you are entering station limits
After completing a TA at a locally controlled location, what does the driver do?
Hand the TA form to the signaller (who cancels it)
After completing a TA at a remotely controlled location, what does the driver do?
Cancel the TA themselves (‘cancelled’, time, date, and signature across the front) and notify Train Controller of the time the TA was cancelled.
