Point Machines Flashcards
When should a driver operate Point Machines?
Only under the instruction of the Train Controller or the Controlling Signaller
What is the purpose of Dual Control Point Machines?
To enable the points to be operated either remotely by a signaller, or (in case of failure) by hand by a competent employee
What are the levers on a DCPM?
Selector lever
Hand throw lever
What two positions does the DCPM selector lever have, and what do they do?
- MOTOR (prevents manual operation; allows operation remotely. This is the normal position.)
- HAND (prevents remote operation; holds the signals covering the position at STOP)
What two positions does the DCPM hand throw lever have, and what do they do?
- Normal position (points are set for the main line)
- Reverse position (points are set for diverging track)
What must you do after manually operating a DCPM?
Secure each lever in the required position with a padlock.
When would a driver operate a hand locking bar?
Only under the instruction of the Train Controller or Controlling Signaller
How do you operate a hand locking bar?
(Be instructed to do so)
(Get Track Access if required)
Ensure the points are lying correctly
Unlock with a 5P key; remove pin
Lift the bar across to rest against the point blade
Insert pin and lock with the 5P padlock
What is the purpose of Electro Hydraulic Point Machines?
To enable the points to be remotely operated by a signaller, or (in case of failure) manually by a competent employee
When does a driver use EHPMs?
Only under the instruction of the Train Controller or Controlling Signaller
What is within the secured box of a EHPM? (3)
The power/manual switch
The red directional control lever
The pump handle socket (with/without pump handle)
What does each setting of the power/manual switch of an EHPM do?
Power – allows remote operation
Manual – holds fixed signals at STOP and allows manual operation
What are the three positions of the directional control lever on an EHPM?
Normal, centre, and reverse
Where are EHPMs located on the Metro network?
Only at Cranbourne sidings
Can a driver set a EHPM back to ‘power’ when finished their movement?
No (only a signal fitter can)
