traditional femininity representations Flashcards
Tunstall
argues media represents + emphasises women’s domestic role, excludes idea of women able to do other things compared to men who are defined by marital or family status
e.g. adverts for cleaning products such as FLASH and febreeze, often contain women advertising the product
Tuchman
argued narrow range of role for women lead to their ‘symbolic annihilation’ in the media - media condemns groups that are not socially valued such as women + depict traditional ideas of feminity e.g. housewives, mothers, sex objects etc
Ferguson
concluded women’s magazines based on cult of femininity and portrayed that excellence is achieved through caring for others
e.g. Cosmopolitan magazine: on the front cover has the headline “50 ways to get sexy hair”- sexualsing womens features and placing importance on their appearance (as if to make them more desirable to men)
Glascock
found that aggression in media was portrayed through men as they were physically aggressive whereas females were verbally aggressive.
e.g. friends the characters monica and rachel fight with words
