there has been a shift from overt racism to inferential racism- showing that there has been a change in media representations of ethnicity. He states that overt racism is directly and consciously showing a negative attitude towards a group of people e.g. “ Black people are trouble” (Overt racism= Open racism). Example of overt racism- in the Tv show Little Britain- the show was stopped due to characters being overtly racist to those of ethnic minorities. Inferential racism is an indirect assumption about a group of people created by the media which ppl see as normal- e.g. you don’t expect a black person to be the hero but you do expect them to be the bad guy- inferential racism= inferred racism. Example for inferential racism: in interviews such as those that take place on the TV show Loose Women- they now allow interviewers to broach topics about stereotypes and discuss them more positively
