Changing age representations Flashcards
(6 cards)
Postman - youth
childhood has begun to disappear due to child interaction with media. Children sexualised in media, adult + children share same music, sports, language and films.
Also emphasised lack of difference between children in adults through clothing. E.g. little girls in high heels, adult men wearing trainers.
Children + youths being exposed to adult content
example - GTA
Osgerby - youth
1900s + 200s negative representation of youths. Whereas 1950s + 1960s youth represented positively
example - Greta Thunberg is an environmental activist, known for encouraging and inspiring young people to protest against climate change- displays deviant behaviour by going against the norms and values of society by protesting and, at times, causing chaos to get her point across- showing deviant behaviour with good intentions.
Lee et al - elderly
conducted study of adverts + found old people underrepresented, appearing in 15% of advertisements - 90% representations positive + elderly people portrayed as ‘golden agers’ enjoying, healthy, active lifestyles. Gender differences - Older men more visible than older women, able to be associated with high status - women associated with family + poverty
e.g.dvertisements for food products such as yoghurt tend to show the whole family enjoying eating it- including the elderly; applying their products to a range of age groups
Biggs - elderly
change in representation of old age in media e.g.
Larger number of older people appearing in soap opera
Older people as more active
Example: the elderly have been presented in soap operas such as Easternders (e.g. the character Dot), coronation street (e.g. the character Emily Bishop) and also in shows such as emmerdale. Example of no.2) the film Dirty Grandpa
- depicts an elderly man as still sexually active, partying, drinking alcohol and taking drugs, (all stereotypes associated with youth) and has a physically active lifestyle
Carrigan and Szmigan - elderly
advertisers targeting old people as consumers to ‘grey pound’ - increase in positive images + positive roles for older people.
Example: older people now have a higher disposable income and more positive role models in the media who influence them to consume beauty products (such as anti ageing
Heintz and Knowles
She conducted research and found that the traditional view has changed. She found that TV Dramas now show a more realistic portrayal of issues from a child’s POV rather than the adults POV. She also found that there was evidence of truth telling and helping others.
Example: M.I.High- a children’s drama TV show- follows undercover teenage spies, they help to protect their city and their peers- displaying helping behaviour
