Tracts Flashcards
What is the corticospinal tract responsible for?
Motor control
What is the dorsal column pathway responsible for?
Vibration, proprioception, and light touch.
What is the spinothalamic tract responsible for?
Pain, temperature, and crude touch.
Which pathway is being described here?
- Low threshold mechanoreceptors.
- Large diameter, A-alpha fibres (thick myelination)
- High conduction velocity
Dorsal column pathway
What are the best bedside tests for the dorsal column pathway?
- Proprioception (bend distal phalanx)
2. Vibrating tuning fork (128Hz)
Which pathway is being described here?
- Nociceptors and thermoreceptors
- A-delta (thin axons, light myelination), and C fibres (no myelin)
- Slower conduction velocity
Spinothalamic tract
What are the best bedside tests for the spinothalamic tract?
- Pain and temperature
2. Pinprick using neurotip
What are the two sections of the dorsal column pathway and which areas of the body are they responsible for?
- Cuneate fasciculus - above T6
2. Gracile fasciculus - below T6
Where do each of these ascending pathways decussate in the spinal cord?
- Dorsal columns (cuneate and gracile)
- Spinocerebellar
- Lateral spinothalamic
- Anterior spinothalamic
- Brainstem lower medulla - medial lemniscus
- Does not decussate
- Spinal cord - at level of entry across anterior white commissure
- Spinal cord - 2-15 segments above point of entry
Where do each of these descending pathways decussate in the spinal cord?
- Lateral corticospinal
- Anterior corticospinal
- Rubrospinal
- Vestibulospinal
- Medullary pyramids
- Does not decussate
- Midbrain
- Does not decussate
