Tracheoesophageal Atresia and Fistula Flashcards
Abnormal connection of two body parts
Fistula
When does the laryngotracheal groove develops into larynx, trachea, and beginning lung tissue
between 4 and 8 weeks of intrauterine life
Refers to obstruction of esophagus
Esophageal atresia
Where do the fistula often occur
Between the closed esophagus and the trachea
It is the incomplete formation of the esophageal lumen, resulting in the proximal esophagus forming a blind pouch which then does not connect to any other structure.
Esophageal Atresia
Occurs when an opening develop between closed distal esophagus and the trachea
Tracheoesophageal Fistula
It can be demonstrated coiled in the blind end of the esophagus on x-ray
Radiopaque catheter
When to diagnose TF
before first fed of infant top avoid aspirations
Where does the TA ruled out
To mothers with hydramnios
Other assesments
Blowing bubbles
firm catheter cannot be passed
Therapeutic management
Emergency surgery to prevent development of pneumonia or electrolyte imbalance
Antibiotic to prevent infections
Gastrostomy
One of major complicaitons
Upper right lobe pneumonia
Observe infant during this time because leaks occurs at anastomosis sites that can cause pneumothorax
day 7-10 post op
