Trachea, Bronchi And Bronchioles Flashcards
How is collapse of the trachea during inspiration prevented?
By rings of hyaline cartilage.
What does the trachea bifurcate into?
Two primary bronchi which enter the lung. These form the trunk of each lung and go on to further divide (up to 11 times) into smaller and smaller bronchi. These tubes are also supported by rings of hyaline cartilage.
What do the first 17 generations of airway (the trachea and 16 successive airway branches) form?
The conducting zone of the lower respiratory system.
At what division of the bronchi are bronchioles found?
12th division.
What is the structure of bronchioles?
They are small, collapsible passageways with smooth muscle walls.
What appears when the bronchioles continue to branch? (Up to 11 times)
The respiratory bronchioles!
What are respiratory bronchioles?
The transition between the conducting airways and the gas exchanging tissues of the lung. These terminate at the alveolar ducts which lead to the alveoli.
What do the structures from the respiratory bronchioles down to the alveoli form?
The respiratory zone of the lower respiratory system.
