Histology of the respiratory tract Flashcards
What are cavities lined with?
pseudostratified columnar epithelium.
What do columnar cells have on their surface?
Many cilia.
Where are goblet cells located and what do they secrete?
They’re located in the epithelium and secrete mucus.
What is the type of epithelium with pseudo stratified columnar, cilia and goblet cells called?
Known as the respiratory type epithelium and is present throughout the upper respiratory system.
What kind of epithelium is found in the larger bronchi?
Respiratory type epithelium.
What is the epithelium like in the peripheral branches?
The epithelium becomes thinner, but cells are still ciliated columnar with goblet cells.
What are the bronchioles lined with?
A simple (not pseudostratified) ciliated columnar epithelium and goblet cells are sparse.
What are the bronchioles?
Distal airways located between the cartilage-walled bronchi and the part where the ciliated epithelium ceases.
What happens at the distal respiratory tract?
It is the site of gaseous exchange.
What are the most proximal parts of the respiratory bronchioles lined with?
Cuboidal ciliated epithelium.
What are the alveolar ducts lined with?
Flattened epithelium.
