Lungs Flashcards
What is the main function of the lungs?
To oxygenated blood by bringing inspired air into close relation with deoxygenated blood in the pulmonary circulation.
How would you describe the lungs in a living person?
Healthy lungs are normally light, soft and spongy.
What are the two lungs separated by?
The mediastinum, containing the heart, great vessels and trachea.
What is the location of the lungs in respect to vertebrae?
They’re located within the thorax and extend from their apex, just above the first rib, level with T1, to diaphragm level with T12.
How do the lungs attach to the heart and trachea?
By structures that comprise the roots of the lungs.
What is the root of the lung formed by?
The bronchus, nerves, lymphatic vessels and the pulmonary vessels entering and emerging from the lung at its hilum.
What happens to the visceral pleura at the hilum?
It reflects to become the parietal pleura and vice versa.
What divides the lung into lobes?
The horizontal and oblique fissures.
How many lobes do the right and left lungs have?
Right has 3 lobes
Left has 2 lobes
What’s the difference between the right and left lung?
The right lung is larger and heavier than the left lung but is shorter and wider because the right dome of the diaphragm is higher.
What’s the difference between the anterior margin of the right and left lungs?
The anterior margin of the right lung is relatively straight whereas the margin of the left lung has a deep cardiac notch.
What part of the left lung does the cardiac notch indent?
The anteroinferior aspect of the superior lobe of the left lung.
What are the 3 surfaces of the lung?
Costal
Mediastinal
Diaphragmatic
What are the 3 borders of the lungs?
Anterior, inferior and posterior.
Where does the apex of the lungs extend into?
The root of the neck, above the first rib.
