Mucles Of Respiration 2. Flashcards
Where are intercostal muscles located?
Between the ribs.
Where do the external intercostal muscles lie in respect to the internal intercostal muscles?
The external intercostal muscles are superficial to the internal intercostal muscles.
How many sets of intercostal muscles are there?
11 sets of each.
Where does the blood supply to the intercostal muscles come from and where does it drain to?
Blood supply comes from intercostal arteries and drains to the intercostal veins.
What veins innervate the intercostal muscles?
The intercostal nerves.
Where do the external intercostal muscles extend from?
Extend from the tubercles of the superior ribs of the intercostal space dorsally, to the cartilages of the ribs centrally on the inferior rib.
Where do the external intercostal muscles end?
Ventrally in thin membranes.
What is the function of external intercostal muscles?
They pull the ribs upwards and forwards during inspiration, causing an increase in both the lateral and anteroposterior diameters.
Where do the internal intercostal muscles begin?
They begin ventrally, at the sternum in the interspaces between the cartilages of the true ribs (ribs 1-7) and at the ventral extremities of the cartilages of the false ribs (8-12).
Where do the internal intercostal muscles extend to?
They extend downwards as far as the angles of the ribs, where they continue to the vertebral column as thin membranes.
What is the function of internal intercostal muscles?
They pull the ribs down and inward during active respiration.
What is the structure of the innermost intercostal muscles like?
They’re incomplete and variable.
Where do they travel and what direction do their fibres pass?
They pass from rib to rib deep to the internal intercostals and their fibres pass in the same direction as the internal intercostals.
What separates the innermost intercostal muscles from the internal intercostal muscles?
The bundle of intercostal blood vessels and nerves.
