TPR Perception Flashcards
Gestalt psychology
an organized whole perceived as more than just the sim of its parts
emergence
when an image appears as a whole and seems to pop out at you (Gestalt)
figure/ground
the gestalt principle that describes our perceptual tendency to separate the figure or object from everything else based on a number of possible variables
multistability
the tendency for ambiguous pictures to pop back and forth between alternative interpretations in the brain
gestalt laws of grouping
- proximity
- continuity
- closure
- common fate
- connectedness
law of proximity
things that are near each other seem grouped together
law of continuity
suggests that points that we perceive as smooth, continuous lines and formes, rather than jointed ones
law of closure
predicts that we will percieve things as complete, logical entities, because our brains will fill the gaps in the information
law of common fate
predicts that objects moving in the same direction are perceived as a unit or group
law of connectedness
predicts that things that are joined or linked or grouped are perceived as connected
