TOX 17 - Poisons inducing methemoglobinemia Flashcards
1
Q
methemoglobin
A
Basically Hb that contains Fe3+ but cannot transport oxygen. Causes pseudocyanosis, tissue hypoxia and death.
normal amount: 0.7%
20% -> hypoxemia
60-80% -> death
2
Q
Oxidising agents
A
Chlorates, perchlorates
directly oxidise Hb
3
Q
Nitrites
A
Nitroglycerin, amylnitrite
Gets converted to nitrates while Fe2+ becomes Fe3+
4
Q
Aromatic amino- and nitro-compounds
A
Amine - oxidation
Nitro - reduction
Fucks with the Fe2+ of Hb turning into Fe3+
5
Q
Reducing stains (methylene blue)
A
Reversible
