Q

Describe the advantages of your fieldwork location.

A

30 mins away from our school
Easy to walk around
Safe as is pedestrianised and policemen walking around
Risk assessment was conducted prior our arrival
Ideal location as it is in the process of regeneration
Diverse range of people to ask opinions from

Q

Desrcibe the underlying theory, concept or issue which formed the basis of your enquiry.

A

The Changing places unit
Leatherhead is going through a regeneration project although all previous attempts had failed:
One way system which was confusing and not sign posted well
Built a new multi story car park to increase number of visitors but very tight corners and small spaces so people were scarping their cars
Pedestrian link to leisure centre however is still very far from town so not good for elderly

Q

Describe a sampling technique you used to collect your data.

A

Random sampling
Asked random strangers if they had heard about regeneration for Leatherhead, their opinion and what they would like to see in the future
Problem: asked people who seemed approachable so not fully random sampling bias

Q

Justify one method of data collection associated with the aim.

A

Annotated photographs that were taken at various periods of time with the changes that had been made in more recent years
Went to those locations and made notes on how it had changed
Gave us an understanding of what leatherhead was like 50-100 years ago therefore we could physically see regeneration efforts and evaluate successfulness
Easy to carryout, simple to set up and easily replicated

Q

Describe and justify one method of primary data collection used in your fieldwork.

A

Given photos of different landmarks
Went there and annotated to show what changed
Advantages =
Not biased and accurate
Replicable
Easy to analyse and see comparisons
Disadvantages =
Only went to four locations

Q

Outline how you obtained and why you used secondary data in your enquiry.

A

Researched already in place regeneration plans and ones that will be implemented on website ‘Transform Leatherhead’ (showed stats and opinions)
Useful because we didn’t get to talk to many residents
Reading articles which showed urgent needed for more facilities

Q

Outline risks associated with primary data collection and explain how you attempted to minimise these.

A

Strangers - if approached do not engage
Getting lost - ensured we didn’t go far away from the high street

Q

Describe how you used one technique to analyse your data and outline the advantages of this technique.

A

Image analysis (removal of meaningful info from images)
Compared photos from 1950s-90s and now 2022 standing in the same area
Stated differences
Local market shops to company shops
Newly built buildings
Pedestrianised streets
Photographs are very accurate and reliable

Q

How far did your fieldwork conclusions match the geographical theory in which your investigation was based on?

A

More older people than younger people so more regeneration projects focused on them
More cafes, book shops than cinemas and clothes shops
Street more pedestrianised and signs easier to understand
Theory suggests regeneration will improve but car park and confusing one way system didn’t help

Q

Explain how your enquiry developed your understanding of the theme under investigation.

A

Leatherhead does need regeneration shown through secondary data and interviews
Highlighted how important regeneration is on a place (can allow further economic development)
Not successful projects so needs ‘Transform Leatherhead’
Need to be carefully considered

Q

Summarise the main conclusions of your results.

A

Already evidence of regeneration (pedestrianised high street and one way system) that were not successful
Elderly ladies missed the old unique Leatherhead and want more individual small shops not chain stores
Show further regeneration attempts need to be carefully thought through
Need more opinions to draw a valid conclusion

Q

Describe how your enquiry could be improved.

A

Didn’t manage to interview many people due to time constraints
Similar ages and gender and opinions (not wide range)
Do this at a busier day and compare with a site with successful regeneration
