24
Q

How is tower ladder positioned on a hill?

A

Position rig parallel to the direction of the slope so that the boom operations will be in the “up-hill” direction. If possible apparatus should be facing downhill.

25
Q

If facing downhill, the turntable will be _ the objective.

A

If facing downhill, the turntable will be PAST the objective. DOWN-PAST

26
Q

If facing uphill, the turntable will be _ the objective.

A

If facing uphill, the turntable will be BEFORE the objective. UP-BEFORE

27
Q

Grades up to what percent are considered flat ground?

A

4%

28
Q

Maximum slope for a tower ladder has been set at?

A

15%

29
Q

Winter ops: On taking up, what should be done to ensure proper drainage?

A

Boom raised 60 degrees
Drains of waterway opened
Open gated inlets

30
Q

When can the basket be moved after placing the roof man to the roof when it is his only means of egress?

A

DO NOT move the basket unless you tell basket firefighter(s) your intentions AND they in turn give approval. OR a visible life hazard should occur.

31
Q

Portable ladder set up in the basket:

A
  • Only life saving operations under extreme conditions
  • 20’, 25’ extension, 35’ extension, life belt/harness, 15’ 1/2” rope with hose strap on one end.
  • Ladder secured at 6th rung
  • 2 people in basket 3 at most
32
Q

What tools are placed in the basket for ventilation purposes?

A

Ax, Halligan, Power saw, 6’ Hook and L.S.R.

33
Q

When tying off in the basket, what is used as a substantial object?

A

Rear metal post

34
Q

When operating on a roof of questionable stability with hand tools or power saw, full use of the personal harness and L.S.R. shall be used to limit travel of operator of operator of tool no more than _ feet from the basket.

A

10 feet. w/ a bowline 15’ loop and personal harness.

35
Q

Use of power saw from basket:

A
  • Position basket as close to ridge pole as possible
  • Saw started in basket, then kept outside of basket until off.
  • Wear Safety Belt
  • One foot on roof one foot in basket
  • 1st cut parallel to ridge pole
36
Q

Order of peaked roof cut:

A

7

11

37
Q

Basket position for the removal of normal sized people from windows and fire escapes:

A

Middle railing of basket level with window ledge, or level with the top railing of the fire escape.

38
Q

Basket position for the removal of obese people:

A

Top basket rail level with the window sill or top level of fire escape.

39
Q

Is it necessary to always put people directly on street level during a tower ladder rescue?

A

Not always, when time is critical, occupants may be placed at lower levels of the fire building, an adjoining fire escape, an adjoining roof or any other area of safe refuge.

40
Q

What is needed for removal using the stokes basket in the tower ladder basket?

A

Blankets, L.S.R. and resuscitator if needed.

41
Q

How is the stokes positioned/attached to the basket?

A

It can be placed upright or diagonal position leaning or lashed to solid part of the basket railing. The stokes can also be lashed to the top railings of the basket. (Patient may not feel comfortable hanging off part of the basket)

42
Q

Who may order the use of tower ladder streams?

A

Only the officer in charge of operations.

43
Q

When the officer in charge changes tactics from an interior to an exterior attack which will require a large stream from a tower ladder what must be done?

A
  • All units operating in OR close to the building shall be warned by handi-talkie.
  • When units are ordered out of the building/area they shall inform the officer in command that they have complied with the order.
  • T.L. operator shall not start water until they are assured that personnel are clear. (Unless there is an immediate life hazard.)
44
Q

If fire in building is on several floors how should the stream be operated into the building?

A

Generally start from the lower floors and work your way up.

45
Q

How is the nozzle positioned at a window? Cockloft?

A

Window- close to and low in the window.
Cockloft- work stream from party wall of most serious exposure toward the center of the building then from party wall of other exposure toward the center or a roof opening.

46
Q

Where the stability of the building is in doubt, the basket shall be placed in a manner minimizing the effects of falling walls, etc…, even if the results limit the stream reach what should be done?

A

If possible the basket should be placed the same distance HORIZONTALLY from the building as it is VERTICALLY below the top of the wall.

47
Q

Can the boom/basket be extended into a building?

A

Yes, if fire conditions permit and only be done at the direction of the officer in command of the fire and after the stability of the building has been verified.

48
Q

Where is the water shut down during tower ladder stream operation?

A

At the supply pumper.

49
Q

What is the best source of water to supply a tower ladder?

A

Satellite water unit (Largest diameter hose - 5” Hose)

50
Q

PSI to supply Tower Ladder? General Nozzle pressure?

A

200-250 PSI
If possible supplied by its own pumper
Nozzle pressure generally about 100 PSI

51
Q
