Who are tourists?
Tourists are people travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for more than 24 hours but not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes
Places of scenic beauty → honeypot tourism
D- places of scenic beauty refers to places of such as mountains, valleys, rivers, deserts, waterfalls, coral reefs and rainforests. which are appealing to the eye
Ex- Grand canyon, arizona, usa
D- honeypot tourism → refers to tourism that attracts large numbers of people due to a site’s scenic beauty→ tourist facilities such as hotels. shopping centres and transports station are developed → tend to be overcrowded during peak seasons
Good facilities → mice →
D- places with good facilities offer a wide variety of activities
Mice- Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events → Usually have venues that can host large scale events such as meetings and conventions → singapore → Singapore Tourism Board, 2,4 mill business tourists in 2017 → 14% of all visitors in 2017
good facilities → medical facilities
Medical facilities- a growing number of people are travelling due to medical tourism → medical tourism is when people travel to a destination to undergo medical procedures
Ex-South Korea popular for those who seeking cosmetic surgery as the country is renowned for its highly skilled doctors and advanced technology
Good facilities → theme parks
Theme parks are places with amusement park settings or attractions that have a central subject or theme, such as movies → cater to a wide variety of people, including young and old
Ex- Walt Disney world in Florida, USA → one fifth the size of Singapore attracts around 17 million visitors in 2011, making it the most visited tourist site in the world
Rich culture →heritage tourism
Heritage tourism → when people travel to locations to experience different cultures and to understand the history of people better → culture refers to the distinct ways in which people live that have developed over time → language, social customs, values and beliefs
Ex- London, UK → 15 million international tourists each year to sites such as the tower of London and Buckingham palace
Rich culture → film induced tourism
Film induced tourism → People travel to see locations featured in flims → influenced by films to visit despite maybe not considering to visit it before the film → may be able to understand how these places inspired the film
Ex- Matamata, New Zealand → There are remains of the set of the film “the lord of the rings”
Rich culture → Pilgrimage tourism
Pilgrimage tourism refers to when people travel to take part in a religious activity
Ex: The annual Hajj to mecca, saudi arabia → 3 million pilgrims →a religious duty for every physically able muslim
Places of conflict → dark tourism
Dark tourism is tourism that involves travelling to sited associated with death and tragedy → usually survivors, relatives and friends of those affected as well as people interested to know more about the event
Ex- Auschwitz, Poland → one of several concentration camps developed by Nazis in world war 2 for Jews and prisoners of war
Role of government in promoting tourism
Governments play a crucial role in their country → influence the number of visitors and their length of stay → set up agencies that devise strategies to help promote tourism in their countries
Ex- Singapore tourism Board → promotes tourism by facilitating tourism-related business to invest in sg → hotels, resorts, cruises
○ encourages the development of new attractions → river safari and the integrated resorts → new business opportunities for tourism industry in sg
Role of the Media in promoting tourism
Media reports about a country or area could influence the decisions of tourists to visit it → media refers to channels through which news and information are communicated to the public. → positive reports such as the friendliness of the local population, interesting culture can attract tourists to visit → tourists more aware of destinations they weren’t previously knowledgeable on before
Ex- Homestays with indigenous groups and long distance cruises are growing in popularity because of favourable media reports from travel writers who make reports on travel websites such as “Tripadvisor.com”
roles of International organisations in promoting tourism
International organisations is a group of different countries that work together for a common purpose → Reports produced by international organisations can encourage or discourage tourists visiting a place
Ex- World health organisation (WHO) → leading authority for health during within the United Nations → provided situation updates and health advisories on avian influenza from 2003 to 2013 which may discourage tourism to at risk countries
