health and deseases gw3 Flashcards
what can Individuals do to manage the spread of infectious diseases
D- by taking social responsibility such as being constantly aware of conditions which may make it conducive for diseases to spread.
Ex- A spray, protective clothing or insecticide- treated nets can be used to reduce contact with mosquitos. →potential breeding sites could be identified and removed

L-
what can communities do to manage the spread of infectious diseases
D- communities are social groups that live in a particular area or share a common culture, values or interest
Ex- community based mosquito control → Managua, Nicaragua → community residents conducted surveys on knowledge of dengue and mosquito control practices → identified mosquito breeding sites and examined households
A- 2004 - 2007 → dengue infection in children declined more than half → households 25% less likely to have breeding sites
What can governments do to manage the spread of diseases? ( precautionary measures)
D- precautionary measures are strategies used to reduce the occurrence of diseases
Ex- Thermal fogging → Thailand → involves the distribution of insecticide by using a fog produced by heat → applied during malaria outbreaks → applied once a week for 4 consecutive weeks
A- Thermal fogging kills adult mosquitoes found outdoors
L- expensive and must be carried out regularly → fog is also a traffic hazard due to reduced visibility
What can governments do to manage the spread of diseases? ( mitigation measures)
D- mitigation measures are strategies used to reduce the impact of a disease after it emerged in a country
Ex- SG NEA vector control → 5 pronged approach → mozzie wipeout (28 april 2013) → increase awareness → Colour coded alert system → indicated the seriousness of dengue through colour coded banners → indicated what preventive measures to take
A- No. of cases w more serious dengue has decreased since 2005 → WHO cited sg as a good role model in managing dengue cases
L- Most people unaware or complacent anout ades mosquitos → difficulties in preventing breeding
○climate change → higher temp → faster breeding
○more ppl had been infected by den 1 virus
