Tourism: Future Predictions and Trends Flashcards
background:
tourism expected to continue growing, by 2020 (1.6 bil)
hugely important to countries, aviation contributes greatly to global warming, future travel MUST be sustainable

key demographics/social trends:
obesity:
should airlines charge differently? (eg. pay for 2 seats)
ageing populations:
specialised requirements –> large print, no steps, culture and history, quality, comfort, convenience, relaxing leisure, more single travellers
Keep it local/ Climate Change/ Purpose of trip:
local –> low-cost travel will end, more intra-region travel/closer to home, locally sourced by 2020, possible metered charges for electricity/water = discount incentive
climate –> some destinations will change focus (ski resort, beach),
purpose –> cost of flying increases (taxes, aviation fuel etc), not “where?” but more “why?”
Cruising/ Labelling/ Alternative transport:
cruise –> currently booming, cheaper, large vessels (up to 5400), family oriented
labelling –> similar to fair-trade coffee, “organic” grown produce, ratings for destinations by impact on local communities, culture and environment
alt. transport –> greater appreciation for travel, train/boat/bike gaining popularity, cruise ship with giant sails,
social/cultural changes/ Sustainability/ Geotourism:
social/cultural –> more people without holiday rights, shorter trips, intra-regional travel/domestic will increase, medical tourism (less cost for health care travel), obesity/ageing pop
sustainable –> more environmentally conscious hotels/resort (shampoos, soaps)
geotourism: enhances geographical character or builds realtionships with local place, culture, people
Aviation changes/ Space travel:
aaviation –> alternative fuels (biofuel), quest for carbon-free aircraft by 2050, A380–> more efficient, more people, less fuel, Airships for frieght travel
space travel –> maybe popular market
