- People have more disposable income.

What are the six stages of the Butler Tourism Life Cycle Model?
1) Exploration: rich adventurous people first start to visit the resort.
2) Involvement: locals start to build businesses around the tourist resort and begin to get involved.
3) Development: lots of money is invested into the resort and the size of the resort significantly increases.
4) Consolidation: much profit is made as there is high visitors.
5) Stagnation: visitors start to get bored of the resort and growth stops.
6a) Rejuvenation: more development takes place and the amount of visitors increase.
6b) Steady decline: interest slowly falls until the resort shuts down.
6c) Major decline: the quality of the area falls and the amount of visitors decreases dramatically.

A ship named the M/V Explorer hit an iceberg and sank. This resulted in a 5km^2 oil sheen that adversely effected wildlife. The clear up involved chemical detergents.

- The IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators) regulates tourism.
- The IAATO banned all ships carrying more than 500 passengers in 2009.
- SSSIs were set up such as Bird Island.
