Topology Flashcards
1
Q
Star topology
A
Each device is connected to a central switch or server
2
Q
Features of a star topology
A
- Simultaneous Access
- Reliable
- Scalable
- Expensive
3
Q
Pros of star
A
+ Very few data collisions, since each device has a dedicated line to switch/server
+ Strong, centralised security
4
Q
Cons of star
A
- Lots of cabling needed
- If switch has no spare ports, adding another device can be difficult
5
Q
Bus topology
A
Each computer is connected to a main cable called the bus
6
Q
Features of a bus topology
A
- Expansion
- Difficulty troubleshooting
- Unreliable
- Cabling
7
Q
Pros of bus
A
+ Uses relatively little cable, making it inexpensive
+ Additional devices can be easily added
8
Q
Cons of bus
A
- Collisions can occur, as multiple transmissions will attempt to use the shared backbone
- If many devices are connected, network transmission can be slow (due to collisions)
