Network Protocols Flashcards
What is a protocol?
A set of rules that governs how a computer communicate on a network
What is Ethernet
A family of protocols
Set of rules that govern how data is formatted for transmission across a LAN
What is wi-fi
Control how data is transmitted on a wireless local area network (WLAN)
What is TCP/IP?
Transfer Control Protocol
Internet Protocol
2 protocols that often work together
Their role is to break up data into packets, each of which is a chunk of data that know where it has been sent from and where it is to be delivered to
What is UDP
User Datagram Protocol
Transmits data packets very quickly, but without checking to see whether each packet has arrived, so it is not always reliable
What is HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol
Set of rules that governs how hypertext is moved around the Internet, from device to device
What is HTTPS
HTTP Secure
Encrypts data that is sent across the Internet
Encrypted data cannot be read so is favoured when entering sensitive info
What is FTP
File Transfer Protocol
What is the SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
How files are moved frm computer to another across the Internet
Heavily relied upon in building websites, moving files from the developer’s computer to a server, from where they can be accessed publicly
What is IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol
Used to allow multiple devices to access the same email account
