Addressing Flashcards
IP addresses
Used by routers to determine whether a packet’s destination is within the current network
Used by network applications to specify which device they wish to communicate with
What happens if packet’s destination is not within current network?
Router passes packet onto WAN
Other routers can use the IP address to figure out where to send the packet
Properties of an IP address
Must be unique within the same LAN
Do not need to be unique globally
Dynamic vs static IP
Static IP is the same IPa every time device connects to a network
Dynamic IP is a new IP address every time it connects to the network
What does NIC stand for?
Network Interface Card
What does every NIC have?
A globally unique MAC address
What does MAC stand for
Media Access Control
When a MAC address is assigned?
When a device is manufactured and cannot be changed once they are assigned
When does a device have different multiple MAC addresses?
When a device has multiple interfaces
What are MAC addresses used for?
Used to exchange data on the same local area network (LAN)
Used by switches and NICs to send data to the intended recipient
