Secret state police

Hunt down Nazi enemies

Through informants - regular people telling on others. They also used torture

This placed them above the law - they had the right of imprisonment without trial

If someone was openly against Hitler their entire family could be arrested

Monitored security of the Reich

Investigated general crimes eg robberies

Why were the Law Courts unfair?
Judges had to swear and oath of loyalty, defendants were often accused and not allowed to defend themselves, judges were Nazis, no juries or defence lawyers
