Topic Two Flashcards
Aerobic
Most efficient way to release energy from glucose.
Glucose+oxygen——— carbon dioxide+water(+energy)
Anaerobic.
Glucose——– lactic acid (+ energy)
Doesn’t release as much energy.
Cramp because of lactic acid.
Can keep using your muscles for longer.
What does anaerobic energy result in?
Oxygen debt.
‘Repay’ the muscles that didn’t get oxygen in time.
Amount of oxygen required in excess post- exercise oxygen consumption.
Diffusion- definition.
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Raw materials in and out of cells.
When a cell respires they use up oxygen and glucose, so the concentration is low inside the cell.
The concentration in the blood is higher.
When a cell respires carbon dioxide is released, so the concentration is high.
Carbon dioxide diffuses from the cell into the blood, where the concentration is lower.
The bigger the difference in concentration…….
The faster the rate of diffusion.
Where does glucose needed for respiration come from?
Glucose comes from the digestive system.
What is breathed in and out from the lungs?
Oxygen breathed in.
Carbon dioxide breathed out.
What is the smallest blood vessel?
Capillaries.
When you excercise….
You respire more.
Why do muscles need energy?
For muscles to contract.
In excercise some muscles contract more regularly.
What does increased respiration?
More oxygen to the cells.
Excercise means…..
Increased breathing rate- more oxygen.
Heart rate increases- oxygenated blood around the body faster.
Respiration.
The process of breaking down glucose to release energy, which goes on in every living cell.
