Topic Test- Pathogens Flashcards
How can bacteria or virus get spread?
- airborn
- bodily fluids
- animals
- food
What is the definition of a virus?
A micro-organism that is smaller than bacterium that causes cellular damage
How do viruses replicate?
They invade cells and reproduce inside them.
What is the structure of bacteria?
- no nucleus
- flexible cell wall
- contain plasmid and chromosomal DNA.
- most contain a flagella (tail allowing it to move)
how do bacteria cause damage?
by releasing toxins that make you feel ill
how do viruses do damage to the body?
by invading the cells and reproducing rapidly making the cell wall eventually burst.
What is the structure of fungi?
they have:
- nucleus
- cell membrane
- ribosomes
- mitochondria
- and a cell wall
How do fungi make you ill?
They feed off living material.
what are protists?
any eukaryotic organism that has cells a nucleus but isn’t an animal, plant or fungus.
How are protists transferred?
They are transferred by vector (a host).
For example malaria is carried by mosquitoes.
What is on specific defence?
an immediate response that is the same for each pathogen. for example barriers to entry or phagocytosis.
What is specific defence?
a slower response and is specific to each pathogen. For example, lymphocytes.
