CONTROLLING BLOOD SUGAR Flashcards
what are the two hormones involved with the control of blood glucose levels?
insulin
glucagon
what’s does eating food containing carbohydrates put into the blood?
glucose
what can excess glucose be stored as?
excess glucose can be stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles
if the blood glucose level is too high what is added?
insulin is added as it removes glucose from the blood
when blood glucose levels are too low what is added?
glucagon is added because it makes the liver convert the stored glycogen into glucose again
what is type 1 diabetes?
where the pancreas produces too little or no insulin
what is type 2 diabetes?
where a person becomes resistent to their own insulin (they still produce insulin but their cells don’t respond properly)
what are the dangers of diabetes type 1 and 2?
can cause the blood sugar levels to rise to a level that is deadly
how do you treat type 1 diabetes?
with insulin therapy which involves:
several injections of insulin throughout the day mostly meal times so the glucose is removed from the blood quickly once the food is digested
other than insuline therapy what can people with type 1 diabetes do to treat?
lower their intake of carbohydrates(sugars)
take regular excercise
what is a main cause of type 2 diabetes?
being obese
what’s the best treatment for type 2 diabetes?
eating a carbohydrate-controlled diet
