Topic G- The Organism In The Enviroment And Feeding Relationship Flashcards
Give the definition of food chain
Food chain is a sequence that represents the way in which energy is transferred from one organism to another in a community.
Give the definition of food web
These are different diagrams that show the way in which different organisms in a community depend on each other for food. A food web is made of many interconnecting food chains.
Give the definition of community
All organisms in an ecosystem
Give the definition of ecosystem
All the living (biotic) and non living (abiotic) components in an environment
Give the definition of population
All the organisms of the same species in a given environment
Give the definition of predator
Predator is an animal that hunts, kills and eats another animal
Give the definition of prey
Prey animal is any organism killed and eaten by another animal
Give the definition of omnivore
An animal that eats both plants and animals
Give the definition of scavengers
Sometimes other animals eat dead remains
Give the definition of decomposers
The organisms that cause decay
Give the definition of producers
Producers are any organisms that can photosynthesize to make their own food
Give the definition of herbivore
Any organism that is not a producer must feed on another organisms to gain energy
Give the definition of carnivores
Consumers that only feed off other animals
Primary consumers
A herbivore that feeds of plants and fungi
Five the definition for habitat
The particular place where a community is found (where the organisms live) eg. Rocky shore
Trophic level
The point at which a organisms is at on a food chain or web
-the bottom level is producers - these are eaten by primary (1st comsumers) which are eaten by secondary consumers and so on…
Give the definition of pyramids
Pyramids show the organism from a single food chain at each Trophic level
How can a food chain be represented
A food chain can be represented by 3 different types of pyramids
- Pyramid of numbers
- Pyramids of biomas
- Pyramid of energy transfer
What are pyramids of energy transfer
Show the total amount of energy transfer through a food chain
- never inverted
- kJ or Kcal/m^2/year
What do the pyramids of numbers show
The relative number of each type of living organisms in a food chain
Eg. Grass, buffalo, lion
What are pyramids of biomass
These shows the dry mass of living material at each level in a food chain
Biomass changes at different times of the year- different shapes at different times of the year
