what is a fixed mindset?
-the belief that abilities are unchangeable

what is a growth mindset?
-belief that abilities/intelligence can be changed through hard work and dedication
-often see failure as an opportunity to learn and grow
-embrace challenges
-discuss weakness + examine why things havent gone as planned
what are the effects of having a growth mindset on sports performance?
athletes thrive during times of challenge
what are the effects of having a fixed mindset on sports performance?
increased catastrophising of situations + higher stress response
Explain talent vs effort
Fixed= someone with a fixed mindset thinks that they have to have talent to be good at something
Growth=someone with a growth mindset will increase their motivation + put emphasis on learning and development
describe the 10,000 hours of practice notion
-notion that someone needs 10,000 hours practice to be elite at something
what is the problem with the 10,000 hours of practice notion?
Everyones ability and effort is different
whats learned helplessness?
once the athlete fails tey feel as though the situation is out of there control-this is a negative cycle that leads to anxiety, sadness and decreased performance levels
define resilience
a persoanlity trait that is a force within an individual that drives them to overcome adversity(Richardson 2002)
when is having resillience important?
-sport
-injury
-burnout
-slump in performance
-career transitions
why is resillience important in sport?
-athletes who are resillient dveloped confidence in their ability to overcome hardships
-open to new experiences
why is resillience important during injury?
-to be able to “bounce back” from injury
-patient resilliency predicts that teh quality of life after injury in regards to mental health with over 25% of patients suffering poor mental health trajectories.
why is resillience important during burnout?
stressful environments weaken resillience and lead to burnout-therefore having high resillience can help prevent burnout or help get out of it
why is resillience important during a slump in performance?
-resilliency can help athletes to overcome obstacles and regain confidence when performing
why is resillience important during career transitions?
resillience is needed because an individual needs to adapt and endure various situations in carer transitions(moving from U16s to U18s)

a difficult or unpleasant situation
does every athlete experience adversity?
yes but how they deal with it will influence their career in the present and future

How can athletes deal with adversity and develop resilience?
-develop coping strategies
-focus on positive outcomes
-identification of personal coping strategies
-social influences to support coping strategies
whats meant by coping strategies when overcoming adversity and developing resilience?
can include positive thinking, engaging in problem solving skills and mindfullness/relaxation techniques
whats meant by focusing on positive outcomes when overcoming adversity and developing resilience?
focus on improving and seeing negatives as an opportunity to lear and grow can help overcome adversity

Athletes must recognise how to overcome adversity themselves and decide what strategies work for them

unhealthy obsession with success and an intolerance to failure that can lead to low self esteem and feelings of inadequatey
