Topic 9 - PTSD Flashcards
Symptoms of PTSD are grouped into three symptom criteria, namely:
- reexperiencing the traumatic event
- avoidance of external reminders or thoughts associated with the trauma
- hyperarousal
Most common comorbid disorders in PTSD ..
alcohol and substance abuse, mood and non-PTSD anxiety disorders
PTSD is linked to health problems such as
cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, depressed immune functioning, pain disorders, increased health complaints
How respons the body when confronted with a life threat?
with a state of physiological arousal, including acute increases in stress-related neurotransmitters and neuropeptides such as corticotrophin-releasing factor, norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine.
PTSD is associated with dysregulation in the following systems:
- noradrenergic system
- HPA axis
- serotonergic system
Neuroimaging findings in PTSD include:
- smaller hippocampal volumes (vulnerability for PTSD)
- smaller left amygdala
- smaller anterior cingulate cortex
- reduced frontal cortex volume
