Topic 9 Flashcards
What are atoms
smallest particles with the chemical properties of the elements
What is the relative mass and charge of a proton, neutron and electron
Proton:
- Mass: 1
- Charge: 1+
Neutron:
- Mass: 1
- Charge: 0
Electron:
- Mass: 1/1840
- Charge 1-
What is the overall nucleus charge
positive
what is the overall atom charge
neutral
What are isotopes
Atoms of the same element, same number of protons, different number of neutrons. Same chemical properties because of the same number of valence electrons, different physical properties because of different mass
How is the amount of energy different in the different electron shells
1st shell: lowest energy level
2nd shell: higher energy than 1st shell
and so on
What are valence electrons? (i.e where can they be found and what are their functions)
Found in the shell furthest from the necleus, involved in the formation of chemical bonds during chemical reactions and thus determines the chemical properties of the element
