Topic 12 Flashcards
Enzymes defenition
biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions in living organisms
6 functions of enzymes
Reduce energy required to initiate chemical reaction
Can only be the catalyst for a single reaction
Synthesise new/ break down substances
Speed up reaction without being used up and remains unchanged
Specific in action
Made up of proteins
Describe the lock and key mechanisms
Substrate has complementary shape to fit in active site of enzyme, substrate binds to active site forming enzyme substrate complex, reactions occur to convert substrate to products
Enzyme is the lock, substrate is the key
Temperature effect on enzyme
increases particle speed, increasing chance of collisions, increases rate of reaction to optimum temperature
After optimum temperature, bonds in enzymes break, causing enzyme to denature
pH level effect on enzyme
more acidic solutions slow down reaction
curve is symmetrical for graph
