Topic 8.2- Life Cycle of Stars Flashcards
What is a nebula
A big cloud of dust and gas
How does a nebula change to the next stage
Overtime it forms a protostar with high amounts of gravity
As a protostar grows in size and attracts more particles from the surrounding nebula, what changes may take place within it
- The temperature increases
- Nuclear fusion could initiate
- It becomes more dense
what is the pressure like in a main sequence star
the outward pressure from nucleaur fusion is perfectly balanced with the inward pressure from gravity
After the main sequence, what could a star become?
- red giant
- red super giant
What do main sequence stars fuse to form what
hydrogen into helium
How are elements heavier than iron formed
in supernovas
What does a red giant become
white dwarf then black dwarf
What does a red super giant become
a supernova
What happens after a supernova explosion
a black hole or a neutron star
What is instantaneous velocity
the direction the moon is travelling
What is Cosmic microwave background radiation
electromagnetic radiation that is observed in all directions
What has happened to the universe since the big bang and what effect has this had on radiation
it has cooled overtime so radiation now has a lower frequency
