Topic 6 Flashcards
What do waves do
transfer energy from one place to another
What is the amplitude
the maximum displacement (how high it goes on a graph)
What is the wavelength
the distance of one oscillation (one crest/trough to the next)
What is the time period of a wave
the time it takes to complete one oscillation
What is frequency
the amount of oscillations per second
How do you find wave speed
V = wavelength x frequency
What directions are the oscillations in transverse waves
The oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
What directions are the oscillations in longitudinal waves
the oscillations are parrallel to the direction of the direction of the wave
some regions are more spread out and spome regions are closer together
What type of waves are transverse waves
- Electromagnetic waves
- Ripples in water
- waves in strings
What type of waves are longitudinal waves
- sound waves
- seismic p waves
