Topic 1.1-1.7 - Energy stores and systems Flashcards
Name the 8 different energy stores
Thermal
Gravitational Potential
Elastic Potential
Magnetic
Chemical
Electrostatic
Nucleur
Kinetic
What is the law of conservation of energy
Energy cannot be destroyed or created only transferred usefully, stored or dissapated
How can energy be transferred
Mechanically
Electrically
Through heating
Via infared radiation
Via light or sound waves
Define an open and closed system
Open system- Can gain or lose energy to ‘outside world’
Closed System- Cannot gain or lose energy to ‘outisde world’
What is the equation for Kinetic Energy
Kinetic Energy= 1/2mv^2
Kinetic Energy (Joules, J) = 1/2 Mass (grams, g) x Velocity (m/s) ^2
Define Kinetic Energy
The energy it possess due to its motion
What is the equation for Weight
Weight (N)= Mass x Gravitational field strenght
W=mg
What is the equation for Gravitational Potential energy
Gravitational Potential Energy= mgh
Gravitational Potential Energy= mass (grams, g) x Gravitational field strength (N/Kg) x height (metres, m)
Define internal energy
The total energy stored by particles making up a substance or system
Define Specific heat capacity
The amount of energy (J) needed to raise temperature of 1kg of an object by 1 degrees C
What is the equation for specific heat capacity
change in Energy (J) = mass (g) x specific heat capacity (J/KgC) x change in temp (C)
