Topic 8- Solubility Flashcards
What is a solvent
A liquid that dissolves in a solvent- solid
What is a solute
A solid that can dissolve in a liquid
What is a solution
When a solute dissolves in a solvent
What is a saturated solution
The maximum amount of solid that has dissolved in the solvent at a particular temperature
How do you dissolve a solid more quickly (4)
Stirring
Adding more solvent
Heating,
Bigger surface area
Solubility
The mass
of a solute that will saturate
100g of water
at a particular temperature
What gases are not very soluble in water (3)
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide
Hydrogen
What gases are very soluble in water
HCl
Sulfur dioxide
Ammonia
Explain why many dead fish were found in a river into which a power station release large amounts of water
The solubility of oxygen
Decreases as the temperature increase
So fish die from lack of oxygen
What happens to the solubility of oxygen (gas) as the temperature increases
Decreases
Name the seven step process to determine solubility
Weigh a clean, dry boiling tube
Add some solid, and reneige boiling tube
Add 10cm3 of deionised water to the boiling tube from a pipette
Put a thermomètre the boiling tube
Heat the boiling tube in a water bath until all the crystals dissolve, stir gently using the thermometer
Allow the solution to cool slowly, and record the temperature when crystals appear
Use between 1g and 5g of solvent in 10cm3 of water, if no crystal lotion is observed try again with more solid
What is water of crystallation
Water that is chemically bonded into a crystal structure
What does hydrated mean
That solid crystals contain water of crystallisation
What does dehydration mean
The removal of water of crystallisation
What does anhydrous mean
Without water of crystallisation
