Topic 8- Atmosphere and Earth science Flashcards
What are the layers of the Earth (centre to outer)
-Inner Core
-Outer Core
-Mantle
-Crust
What produced the Earth’s early atmosphere?
Volcanic eruptions
The crust
-5-50km thick
-Surface we live on
The mantle
-3000km thick
-Solid with some liquid
Outer core
-2250km
-liquid iron (movement produces magnetic field)
Inner core
-1200km
-Solid iron+nickel
Earth early atmosphere contained…
-Lots of CO2
-Water vapour
-Little Oxygen and other gases
How did the ocean form?
-Earth cooled
-Water vapour condensed into oceans
How did the amount of Oxygen build up in the atmosphere?
-Ocean plants (algea)
-Photosyntheis
-Produced O2
O2 build up in atmosphere
How did CO2 levels decrease?
-Highly soluable in water (dissolved in oceans)
-Plants used it for photosynthesis
What is the chemical test for oxygen?
-Light a splint
-Blow out the splint (glowing)
-Place it into the gas
-If oxygen the splint will relight
Relight a lit splint
What is the greenhouse affect?
-CO2,CO, water vapour absorb heat
-Radiated from Earth
-Gas then releases heat energy to Earth
-Keeping Earth warm
What proves human activity cuases climate change?
-Rise in CO2 and temp levels correlate
-Recent activity shows higher CO2 production
-Satelites show less sun energy is leaving atmoshpere
What undermines the CO2 and temp correlation?
-Location and methods to find CO2 levels historically were more unaccurate
What is todays atmosphere?
-78% Nitrogen
-21% Oxygen
-0.9% Argon
-0.04% CO2
